Amish Furniture Care
Care and maintenance of your Amish furniture
Most of our furniture is crafted by local Amish Craftsmen. The result is a beautiful blend of the Amish culture, combined with more contemporary and traditional designs. Due to weather patterns and nature, no two trees are alike; texture, color and density of grain vary within a single tree. This causes the acceptance of stains and sealers to vary also; this we call “Nature’s Mystery” in Solid Hardwood. Knots and swirls will appear in the grain. These naturally occurring patterns are not to be construed as defects, but rather perceived as; “The Personalized Touch of Elegance and Beauty of Nature’s Mystery in Solid Hardwoods.”
Although we make every effort to bring you the very best in style and quality, there will be instances where “Nature’s Mystery” will decide the character of your “Uniquely Personalized Piece of Furniture.”
So, due to the nature of the wood, stain colors are not guaranteed to be the same as the samples. Solid wood furniture naturally responds to changes in temperature and humidity by expansion and contraction. These natural responses are not defects, and do not necessarily affect the strength of the furniture.

How to Prevent Heat and Moisture Damage
Heat and moisture are two of the most significant threats to wood furniture. At Jake’s Amish Furniture, we advise customers to use protective measures to safeguard their furniture from these elements. Always use trivets or heat-resistant mats when placing hot dishes or cookware on wood surfaces to prevent heat marks and warping.
Moisture can also be damaging. Use coasters under drinks and wipe up spills immediately with a soft, dry cloth. Water rings and stains can seep into the wood, causing lasting damage. Avoid placing wood furniture in high-humidity areas, to reduce the risk of warping and mold growth. By adopting these simple protective habits, you can preserve the beauty and strength of your Amish Crafted Furniture for years to come.
Winter Care for Your Furniture
Winter weather poses unique challenges for wood furniture. Dry indoor air caused by heating systems can sap moisture from wood, leading to cracks, gaps, and warping. At Jake’s Amish Furniture, we recommend using a Cool Air Moisturizer during colder months to maintain indoor humidity levels between 50% and 60%. Protect your furniture by keeping it away from direct heat sources, such as radiators and heating vents. Prolonged exposure to heat can dry out the wood and damage finishes.
Additionally, avoid placing furniture near drafty windows or doors where cold air can directly impact the wood. Proper care and environmental control during the winter ensure your furniture remains beautiful and functional for years to come.
The Role of Humidity in Wood Furniture Care
Humidity control is vital for the care and longevity of solid wood furniture. Wood naturally expands and contracts with changes in humidity, which can cause cracking, warping, or gaps in seams. At Jake’s Amish Furniture, we emphasize maintaining a consistent indoor humidity level between 50% and 60% to protect your investment.
Keep the humidity in your home between fifty to sixty percent, with moderate temperatures. During dry winter months, indoor air can become extremely dry, drawing moisture from wood furniture. Using a Cool Air Moisturizer helps maintain optimal humidity levels, preventing the wood from shrinking and cracking. It is not uncommon for us to pump 20 gallons of water; every 24 hours into the air here in our 6,948 square feet showroom during December through March. Conversely, in the humid summer months, a dehumidifier or air conditioning can reduce excess moisture in the air, protecting your furniture from swelling or warping.
Never place wood furniture near heat sources like radiators, fireplaces, or heating vents, as well as in direct sunlight or on top of or in front of baseboard heaters. These conditions accelerate moisture loss and increase the risk of damage. Placing furniture in stable, climate-controlled environments minimizes stress on the wood, preserving its structural integrity and appearance.
By managing humidity and environmental conditions in your home, you can ensure that your Amish-crafted furniture retains its beauty and durability for generations.

Customer Testimonials
Jake's Amish Furniture Store, OH
The storefront has a healthy amount of IN-STOCK furniture that you can take away the same day. Most places around have a showroom-only with anywhere from a 14 week to 9 month wait time on pieces; I know that's the standard for hand-made furniture, but it deserves special mention that you can pick up something same-day here.
Jake himself is very pleasant and informed. I had an enlightening conversation with him while browsing the rest of the shop.
When I need more furniture in the future, I will return here.
